Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
