A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using these treatments need to be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
