Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers have found that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
